Meet the Ravery’s Hairdressing Team

Rachel

Rachel

Creative Director

“I established Ravery’s Hair and Beauty Salon in Oxted, as I wanted to create a Salon for both men and women which provided professional services in a relaxed and friendly environment.

“I have been in the hairdressing industry now for over 10 years and I have seen many hairdressing fads come and go, but Aveda seem to have the balance right. They always manage to stay on trend by creating new colours, haircare and skincare products each year, whilst maintaining high environmental standards and ethical accountability.

What do you love most about hairdressing?

What I love most about hairdressing is the fact that I get to go to work everyday, never quite knowing where the day will take me. Hairdressing is such a creative industry and I am passionate about making all of my clients feel a million dollars. I enjoy being part of a hard working and dedicated team of individuals, who pride themselves in going the extra mile (whether it be giving an extra long scalp massage, offering clients extra teas and/or coffees or just spending extra time on a colour service to make sure that the end result is just right) – it results in the Salon being an exciting place to work and we all get a lot of satisfaction from making our clients feel good.

What are you best at?

My speciality is cutting short hair and fringes.

What are you currently interested in?

I am currently very focused on reducing the salon’s environmental impact. At present I am introducing new recycling measures and installing new technology to cut down on colour wastage. I feel that if we all do our little bit to help the planet, the world will be a better place.

Who is your hair crush?

Halle Berry – I have always loved her short hair styles and how she plays around with different fringe dynamics!

Why did you decide to work with the Aveda brand?

Aveda is such a great brand to work alongside as their whole product range is based upon Ayurvedic principles i.e. what we put in or on our body should work in harmony with it and not fight against it. Aveda have been so in tune with the environment and our planet for more than 40 years (long before many recent environmentally-friendly hair companies jumped on the band wagon). They are a completely carbon neutral company and will be carbon positive by 2021.

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

I would be an Owl as I always think about things long and hard before making a decision in order for it to be a very informed one! I am also not a great morning person...I’m never grumpy but my brain does not kick into gear before 8am!

What do you love most about hairdressing?

I love doing a job where I am able to make people feel beautiful and happy. It is such a great honour to be able to uplift someone’s day and have a positive impact on their mood. I also love the fact that my job gives me creative freedom to constantly create and personalise hair styles to suit my clients.

With over 14 years of hairdressing experience I can honestly say that I still love every minute of my job. Hair has and always will be my passion. I hope to continue to grow from strength to strength as a Master Stylist at Ravery’s and as a long standing member of Ravery’s fantastic team.

What are you best at?

My forte is helping my clients with fine hair to achieve thicker, fuller looking hair.

What are you currently interested in?

I love to be in the outdoors, soaking in the fresh air and making memories with my little family – just having fun and laughter is great for the soul! I am also passionate about learning all of what Aveda is currently doing to minimise the environmental impact. I love the fact that Aveda does not test on animals which is very important to me as I am a true animal lover. I also enjoy watching movies and musicals, old and new.

Who is your hair crush?

My hair crush is old school ‘Jennifer Aniston’ – and I’m sure a lot of women will agree with me. Her hair in ‘Friends’ caused much hair envy amongst us women! And ever since her ‘Friends’ days, I cannot recall her having one bad hair cut or colour, so I am definitely giving her Stylist the big thumbs up.

Why did you decide to work with the Aveda brand?

I can honestly say, “Once you go Aveda, you won’t go back....” Well, that’s how I feel and I have worked with Aveda now for 11 years. When I first started using it, it was love at first sight – the fact they are a cruelty-free brand, how their products smell so lush, earthy and natural, to their unique, shiny colour formulations that are not pre-mixed – I am truly an Aveda fan – 100%!

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

If I were an animal I would be a snow leopard because they are rare and unique with the most beautiful shiny fur that you have ever seen.

What do you love most about hairdressing?

What I love most about hairdressing is being able to make people feel good on a daily basis, as well as getting the opportunity to connect with people and their personalities. Hairdressing has always allowed me to express my creative side and I enjoy sculpting unique hairstyles to suit my clientele. I have been hairdressing since 1996 and still love what I do. Hairdressing is an industry that is constantly evolving and always keeps me on my toes – I often come home from work and out of choice, study more of what I do through social media platforms – yes, I am that passionate about my job! I also enjoy working with like-minded individuals that I can bounce ideas off of.

What are you best at?

I’m not sure it’s what I am best at, but it is definitely what I enjoy the most - and that is short haircuts.

What are you currently interested in?

At the moment I am currently interested in researching new hair trends and styles through social media platforms such as Instagram. I am discovering daily via Instagram and other social media sites new hair inspiration ideas, which in turn is providing me with added education and knowledge within my industry. At age 41 and having been in hairdressing for a long while, to have such a quick, simple portal to millions of other Stylist’s work is truly amazing.

Who is your hair crush?

My hair crush is Jennifer Lopez as she always looks impeccable and knows what suits her.

Why did you decide to work with the Aveda brand?

The first time I worked with the Aveda brand was in the 90’s and at this point in my career I had no clue about who they were as a company. However, I soon discovered that they were a very unique brand in many different ways...the way they actually care for the environment, to caring for the Stylists – the unique way their colour ranges can be mixed is second to none. I can be a real colour scientist! There is also quite simply no other lifting agent (bleach) like Aveda’s within the hair industry – it lifts hair so cleanly without causing any excess damage – I don’t know how they do it!

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

I would be a raccoon as they are known for being intelligent, resourceful and very capable of forming different, complex social relationships. They are also very good at using tools. If I could add two more reasons it would be because they are super cute and I look similar to them because I always end up smudging my mascara during my working day.

What do you love most about hairdressing?

What I really enjoy most about hairdressing is meeting new people, being creative as well as building up a great relationship between myself and my client, whereby I can take them on the total ‘Aveda experience.’ I love learning the latest hairdressing techniques and trends within the industry and love it even more when my clients want to experiment with something new!

What are you best at?

I am great at creating perfect natural highlights with a soft bouncy blow dry.

What are you currently interested in?

I am currently interested in soft Balayage techniques and achieving the perfect warm, caramel blonde highlights. For everyone of my clients, I aim to achieve the ‘perfect look’ to compliment their face shape, skin tone and bone structure whilst ensuring that it is low maintenance, in order that they can replicate the same style at home. “Stylish but effortless” is my motto!

My hair crushes are:

Stacey Solomon – I love that her hair always looks stylish, healthy and bouncy. In my eyes she has the most perfect, natural brown shade with some soft blonde balayage.
Kate Middleton – I feel she has the perfect hair length for her age and face shape. Her hair style comes across as sophisticated and her colour suits her skin tone.

Why did you decide to work with the Aveda brand?

There are so many reasons why I love to work with the Aveda brand – where do I start?

They are a cruelty-free brand.
All their products are naturally derived and at least 90% organic in every bottle.
They have three different colour ranges and all the colour can be customised – meaning we can find THE perfect colour shade for our clients.
Aveda is an environmentally friendly brand and their products are paraben free.
Aveda gives back to the world!

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

I would be a dolphin because they are good at communicating with their pod and work best in a team. They are also a symbol of balance, joy and harmony.

What do you love most about hairdressing?

I have been in the hairdressing industry for a very long time and have been lucky enough to work abroad in Australia and New Zealand during my career. Still to this day I get a buzz from making my clients look and feel amazing. I especially enjoy cutting and have been on a couple of cutting masterclass courses.

What are you best at?

Contemporary and classical cutting and colouring techniques.

What are you currently interested in?

I love everything horticultural. I really enjoy growing my own food and flowers on my allotment – it gives me a great deal of satisfaction growing something from seed. At the weekends I love taking my three dogs on long country walks. I also enjoy good vegetarian colourful cooking, going to the cinema and going to see musical theatre when I get the opportunity!

Who is your hair crush?

Lady Gaga! She has experimented with it all and I’m always so inspired.

Why did you decide to work with the Aveda brand?

I wanted to work with the Aveda brand because I strongly believe in No Animal Testing. I also like that all Aveda colours and their whole product line are plant-based and always created with a social and environmental conscience.

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

I would be an Owl just because of how long I have been in the hairdressing industry! I started my career in 1976 – a fantastic hairdressing ‘time’ when precision cutting really started to make some headway in the industry. 1976 was very influenced by ‘Punk’ and this era brought out a lot of creativity. I have attended many leading hair academies over the years, which has very much kept my passion alive. I can honestly say that I love my job.

What do you love most about hairdressing?

I am naturally quite a creative person and I love that hairdressing gives me the opportunity to express this side of me. I particularly enjoy styling hair and creating Hair Ups for special occasions. I also love working with Aveda’s hair colours, because I can create completely customised shades to suit my clients.

What are you best at?

Hair Up

What are you currently interested in?

I really enjoy painting and drawing as well as seeing live music. The Aveda brand also really interests me as they are unlike any other hair or skincare brand. I really like the fact that Aveda’s products are made from at least 97% naturally derived ingredients, and that as a company, they partner with indigenous communities around the world. I love it when Aveda brings out new products for us to try in-salon!

Who is your hair crush?

Zendaya – I love how she has experimented with so many different styles and they all seem to suit her. I especially like it when her hair is red.

Why did you decide to work with the Aveda brand?

I chose Aveda because I believe they are a very genuine company. Aveda are very transparent in how they manufacture their products (using only 100% wind power) and how they give back to the world (supporting tribal and indigenous communities so that ingredients can be sourced ethically and sustainably). I also love the smell of Aveda products!

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

I would be a Deer because they are gentle but determined, with the ability to adapt and change their direction, instead of giving up.

What do you love most about your job?

I love getting to meet and chat to all the interesting people that come through Ravery’s door! Having been a Ravery’s client for the past 9 years, I know how important great customer service is. Ravery’s to me has always been a stylish, welcoming and friendly Hair and Beauty Salon, making me feel a more polished version of myself when I leave.

What are you best at?

I’m great at reading people and responding intuitively. I like to make people feel comfortable and at ease.

What are you currently interested in?

I am currently interested in reading crime novels and find that when I get the time to do this that it is pure escapism! At Ravery’s I am also interested in learning new social media skills and currently I am developing my mixed media knowledge.

Who is your hair crush?

Charlize Theron. At the moment I adore her with a chin length bob. It suits her face shape perfectly. I also love her blonde and aspire to her shade of blonde all the time.

Why did you decide to work with the Aveda brand?

Having used Aveda products for many years before working at Ravery’s, I knew how great Aveda products made my hair feel as well as smell divine. Having recently been on an Aveda product Training Course, I now love that I get to impart more knowledge to clients about the goodness that is in each haircare and skincare bottle. There truly is a social, ethical and environmental story behind every Aveda product that is bought.

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

I would be a lioness as I am very protective of my children and can be a force of nature when required.
